Week 4

Pinterest and Diigo

The topic of Week 4 was Managing Information through Social Bookmarking and Tagging. My project group 17 had finalized our idea for our final  project by this week. We met in the library to discuss possible ideas before this before settling on creating a mobile application which would organize information on UCD electives to make it easier for students to pick a suitable elective.

I set up a Pinterest account by following the instructions on Blackboard. I created a Pinterest profile and then had to pick 5 images that best represented my hobbies and interests. I decided to go for some quite broad topics such as Fashion, Education, Funny, Music Festivals and also Game of Thrones. I then pinned the sample pin given in the instructions. I created a Board and added the pin(s) as shown.

I re-pinned and categorized pins appropriately. I had heard of Pinterest before this experience but never had an account,so I was interested to learn more about the social media site. However, I doubt I will use Pinterest again as it does not personally appeal to me.

Diigo
We also had to create an account with Diigo this week. I had never heard of Diigo before this so I was interested to learn more. I learned that "Diigo is a free social bookmarking, research, and knowledge sharing tool created to mimic the ease of taking notes while providing a network for sharing and discovering information." I downloaded the Diigolet toolbar to my bookmarks in order to easily save and tag websites and information. The Diigolet toolbar is highlighted in this screen-grab.

We then were directed to practice Diigo on a sample website in the instructions. In this screenshot, I am in the process of tagging this Time article. Diigo has given suggestions on what to tag it based on other users, which makes identifying the information easier.
After this week's session of social book-marking, I think I will definitely use Diigo and the Diigolet toolbar in future, but personally would not use Pinterest.
